Linguistic chauvinism in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu is a state known for its tolerance and ancient culture.விருந்தோம்பல் has always been the pride of Tamils, right from ancient times. But,ever since Independence, linguistic fanatics have overtaken Tamilnadu and hijacked the ideology of the Tamils.Opposition to Hindi has been a matter of pride for politicians in Tamilnadu. They always claim that Sanskrit(Hindi) has prospered at the cost of Tamil. They even attribute(without even an ounce of evidence) the fall of the Indus-Valley civilization to the advent of Sanskrit-speaking Aryans.True, such fanatics live all over the country, but the opposition to Hindi is not as strong as it is in Tamilnadu. For the politicians in Tamilnadu, learning Hindi is blasphemous. This has reached a crescendo in the last decade.
Once Hindi was adopted as the national language of the country, school students were instigated by hardcore fanatics to protest against this logical move of the Nehru government. They ridiculously demanded that Tamil,a language spoken by less than 5% of the country's population, should be made the national language. There is no debating the point that Tamil is indeed a great language, maybe even the oldest in the world, after probably Sanskrit. But,any demand should be backed by logic and not emotion.Of course, you have the right to demand even baseless things in a democracy, but what purpose will it serve? The demand for making Tamil as the national language still goes exists, but not as ferociously as it did in those early days of Independence.....
Nowadays,it is more about the oppression of other languages within the state.By a systematic approach,Hindi has been cunningly excluded from the Tamil Nadu state board syllabus.Right from the start,Tamil Nadu has always differed from other states in its educational policy. While all other states in the country adopted a 3-language policy while TN went for a 2-language one.English, thankfully, was compulsory, while matriculation students had the option of learning either Tamil or Hindi.Under the state board syllabus,Tamil was the compulsory medium of instruction while English was the mandatory 2nd language. There was no room for Hindi-the absence of the opportunity to learn a 3rd language took care of that.
Anyway, there were few takers for the state board medium of education as most parents opted to enroll their children in the CBSE or Matric stream of education.in CBSE,Hindi was  compulsory(it still is).The Tamil Nadu government recently decided to merge the matric and state board streams of education. When it did so,it conveniently excluded Hindi from the list of subjects which one could study. At present, there is no option for a student coming under the state board scheme, but to study Tamil. This is the case with many more states across India(in the state-sponsored boards,at least). This is indeed, welcome. But,one cant study Hindi, even if he wants to.I didn't call this as a cunning move for nothing.
It cuts off the student from the national language-Hindi-the language spoken by an over whelming majority in the country. The purpose of school education is to provide children with the necessary knowledge to prepare them for future challenges.Sadly,TN politicians use education as a tool for furthering their own divisive, narrow minded ideology. One look at the Tamil text books and you get a fair idea of their crooked ideas.Agreed, they don't tare Hindi to shreds, but they brainwash the students that Tamil is the only language worth knowing.Of course, language is a matter of choice, but you are actually denied the opportunity to pick your choice........
The recent decision of the Tamil Nadu govt. to exclude Hindi imposes problems of alarming proportions to not only State board students but also to students who study under the CBSE stream in Tamil nadu. For one,it eliminates the possibility of student transfer from  CBSE to state board if the student opts for Hindi,as one can no longer learn the national language under the state board scheme. Thus, even if a parent were to opt for the more advanced CBSE,he(or she) would think twice before having her child learn Hindi.I have not seen any such state where not knowing the national language is considered as a matter of pride, rather than a handicap. Moreover, just spare a thought for the Hindi-speaking minority that lives in Tamil Nadu.Isn't it natural for each and every soul to have a desire to learn his/her mother tongue ?The same CM who moots for Tamil education in Maharashtra has outlawed Hindi in his own state. We are faced with a possibility that in another 50 years or so,every body sings the national anthem(in hindi),but no one in the state knows the meaning.
There is significant opposition to English, though not as strong as there is for Hindi.Just watch மக்கள் TV if you want any proof. There is significant support for the demand that tamil alone should be used in the Madras High court. The government has announced that first preference to jobs would be given to those who study in Tamil. The government's agenda is clear-the more isolated you are from the external world, the more you shall be rewarded. The introduction of Tamil-medium Engineering syllabus supports this point. The same government which supports the introduction Tamil in universities the world over wants to create a linguistic void in its state.
It would do well to recollect Bharathiar's(whose footsteps it claims to follow) famous verse
"சென்றிடுவீர் எட்டுத்திக்கும் கலைச்செல்வங்கள்
யாவும் கொணர்ந்து சேர்ப்பீர்"

  1. Yeah its true, bcoz during my Higher sec school, i was allowed only French or Tamil as a secondary language, NOT HINDI..

Its the opposite in northern states.

    1. Yes I agree with you. The North Indians are more fanatical than South Indians. North Indians preach 3 language formula to be followed by all Indians. But you go to their states all the highways (except the National highways) will have sign boards only in Hindi. The criticize Tamilnadu for being fanatical, but go even to the smallest village in Tamilnadu, the name of the village will be displayed in both Tamil and English. When the North Indians live in a glass house they should not throw stones.

  2. Agreed.Tamil politicians preach that the children of the state should learn under Tamil medium of instruction while their own children study in convents and hence graduating from England or USA.The move would be logical and more planned if development of the language is the only aspect in the minds of these so called language fanatics.

  3. With due respect, please read the constitution well before claiming a language as a national language. Here are some facts as per the Constitution of India

    1. India has no national language
    2. Article 345 recognized 14 major languages as official languages which as of 2008 is increased to 22 per eight schedule
    3. Hindi was accorded a special status as a primary Official language for the "Union Government of India" pushing English to secondary official language (was primary before this) via Article 343 - Official Languages Resolution (1968)
    Source: http://www.rajbhasha.nic.in/GOLPContent.aspx?t=endolresolution

Now, fact 3 clearing indicates that Hindi is made a "Official" language along with English as a language for communication between Union goverment offices- and Union government offices means all Central Govt. establishments like Parliament houses, Reserve bank, Railways, Income tax dept., Armed Services etc. This does not mean that Hindi is a national language nor the official language for all its Citizens. What it means is that people working/joining in these Union Government offices must know either Hindi or English for inter office communications

Now, you can see who is cunning. It is Hindi chauvinism that has led to widespread misbelief that it is a national language. Now, why should a child studying in TN be forced to study Hindi? is that not Hindi chavinism when one particular language does not deserve any special status than the rest in a a democratic country? The CBSE (which is a Union Govt. entity) devised the 3 language policy to spread Hindi to non hindi states. Now, ask yourself who is cunning?

Also, to get another fact straight, TN politicians did not fight against Hindi 'language' in 1965, they fought against making Hindi the 'only' official language of the Union government, which will lead to people from non-hindi speaking states to be incompetent in joining Central government jobs. Does that make any sense to you? I am sure my point will make sense to any person with self-respect to his/her own mother-tongue and understands democracy too!

    2. Let us understand something here.... Nehru tried hard to make HINDI as national language... But it was dropped...
1)The politicians here opposed HINDI for the sake of gaining popularity and vote bank. They succeded in doing that.
2)HINDI is important to communicate with the rest of the country. But it cannot be made as language of instruction. It SHOULD NOT be made.Every state has the right to keep their culture, language, tradition alive.
3)It can be taught for the sake of communication. It WILL NOT be the medium of instruction.

  4. BTW, you do not seem to know another fact that our national anthem was written in Bengali and not Hindi which IMO implies that you do not have the required qualities to write such articles in the Internet medium. I pity your site visitors for taking back absurd and inaccurate information.

Here is another excerpt from your own article that I would like to point out:

"Moreover, just spare a thought for the Hindi-speaking minority that lives in Tamil Nadu.Isn't it natural for each and every soul to have a desire to learn his/her mother tongue ?"

So, does the Govt. in New Delhi or UP states provide an option to learn Tamil or Kannada or Bengali as second language for minorities living there? Isn't it natural for each and every soul to have a desire to learn his/her mother tongue in the same country where another child from Delhi or UP can learn Hindi in Karnataka or Andhra Pradesh?

    1. Dear Saravanan,

As said in my post, choosing a curriculum is in our hands. Every major city in India has their fair number of linguistic associations and the people yearning to study their choice of languages can learn there. It is a decision by the educators to serve the demand and local language surely takes the larger pie.

  5. Totally inaccurate and you are trying to impose your views as facts!!! What's wrong in having English as THE language of country instead of Hindi.

  7. Greetings Sir,
I beg to differ with your perspective . Let me clarify certain things before I furnish my side of the arguments.

    1. You have mentioned Hindi as our National language , which is completely wrong and misguiding. As my friend Mr.saravanan explained in his post previously , India doesn't have a National language and WE INDIANS do not follow the principle of "ONE LANGUAGE" . We follow "UNITY IN DIVERSITY ". For all these 25 years I have been under the misconception that Hindi is our national language, but it is totally false. I request you to read our constitutional act article 343 (official language act) or the articles in any of our leading news papers(Jan 2010 articles) regarding the judgement given by the Gujarat High court stating that Hindi is not our national language.

Now that I have made my point clear that "Hindi is not our national language".. Why is the Govt so biased towards Hindi ?? which is just an official language. I mean We have around 23 official languages and 2000 dialects , Why has our Govt been mentioning Hindi as a national language for all these years and why did they make it compulsory to all the non Hindi speaking regions, when it is no where mentioned as a national language in our constitution ?? .. Don't you think this is due to cheap political tricks played by the Hindi chauvinistic politicians. Can you justify the imposition of Hindi to all the non hindi speaking states?.

Regarding the TN opposing Hindi , you are totally wrong Sir , they do not oppose Hindi or stop anyone from learning hindi Sir. They oppose the imposition of Hindi on the non hindi speaking states. Yes I do agree there were politicians who tried to create separate land for south(I do not support that and that's a blunder) , but then again it was purely due to the imposition of Hindi at that time Sir. Only after the anti-hindi agitation in 1965. English became the primary official language along with hindi , to help the people from the non hindi speaking state ! . The aim was not to go against hindi but to make all the regional languages as par with Hindi Sir... but due to some bad tamil politicians it was misleaded. We are ready to learn hindi and accept hindi but not as a notional language , but as a regional language of a hindi speaking state. We will learn it if necessary , why make it a must . Do you think that Hindi has spread through out india due to its culture or richness ? . pls Sir , it has spread only because of the imposition!

  8. Hello all,

If Hindi is imposed on the population and declared as a National Language, then where is the freedom of choice? So in some ways linguistic fanatics advocate that freedom of choice should not be there in choosing to learn languages....

Within the constitutional Domain an Indian subject has all rights to either learn or not to learn any language or any courses that are taught. If State board decides not to include Hindi in the curruculum, then the reason for the same is, no demand. If there is a demand the supply will follow. Don't be like a frog in a well. Urban population is not the only population where the demand is. The nation's lifeline is in Villages, said Bapu.

If this debate goes to such a proportion, then Hindi Fanatics will start articulating that Hindi should be a compulsory language in IB curriculum.... why not in American Syllabi....

So, please respect the decision of the educators in Tamil Nadu. There exists Hindi Prachar Sabha and which ever student who wants to learn the so called "National Language" they can go and learn it there.... I am one of those humble students who learnt Hindi, out of compulsion by my Parents, thru Hindi Prachar Sabha. However I did not pursue it after Madhyama, as it was not my cup of tea.

    :)

    3. Why dont you try learning tamil... Its as good as Hindi... It is oldest survivng language ...Even Sanskrit can be compared with this.. Such is the pride of TAMIL.... Tamil was corrupted with lots of words from devanagiri... I feel tamil should've been older than sanskrit... "Sangam" is not from sanskrit to tamil... Instead...tamil to sanskrit...
